A strategic high-level committee is now in place to supercharge Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in Tamil Nadu, courtesy of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. This initiative will audit performances, recommend growth pathways, and amplify FPO influence statewide.
Stemming from Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s recent Erode engagements—where farmers voiced operational, technological, and market pain points—the ministry wasted no time in establishing the panel.
Expertise converges in the committee: NABARD for funding models, NAFED for federation insights, SFAF-Tamil Nadu for regional dynamics, ICAR-NRCB for specialized crop R&D, FPO leaders, civil society reps, and ministry insiders. They’ll unpack institutional management, commercial operations, tech outreach, aggregation-value addition-marketing chains, and capacity enhancement needs.
Forward-looking proposals will emphasize superior business ecosystems, advanced advisory mechanisms, collaborative integrations, and promotional market thrusts. Key focus: Tamil Nadu’s banana, turmeric, coconut, tapioca sectors, plus organic and natural farming innovations.
The committee has two months to furnish its report to the Agriculture Department. Hosted by ICAR-ATARI Hyderabad, with NRCB Tiruchirapalli and KVK support, it ensures rigorous field engagements and seamless execution.
FPOs are game-changers for smallholder farmers, enabling scale, risk-sharing, and profitability. This Tamil Nadu-centric push aligns with national goals, potentially replicating successes elsewhere and fortifying India’s agri-economy against future uncertainties.
