  • Telegram To Share Your IP Addresses, Phone Numbers With Authorities If… |

New Delhi: Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has shared in his post that the messaging app will share IP addresses and phone numbers with authorities in response to valid legal requests.

“To further deter criminals from abusing Telegram Search, we have updated our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, ensuring they are consistent across the world. We’ve made it clear that the IP addresses and phone numbers of those who violate our rules can be disclosed to relevant authorities in response to valid legal requests,” Durov posted.

He said the problematic content the company identified in Search is no longer accessible, asking users to report any suspicious elements on Telegram Search.

“Over the last few weeks, a dedicated team of moderators, leveraging AI, has made Telegram Search much safer. All the problematic content we identified in Search is no longer accessible. If you still manage to find something unsafe or illegal in Telegram Search, please report it to us via @SearchReport.”

“Search on Telegram is more powerful than in other messaging apps because it allows users to find public channels and bots. Unfortunately, this feature has been abused by people who violated our Terms of Service to sell illegal goods,” he added.

Durov said that these measures should discourage criminals on Telegram Search which is meant for finding friends and discovering news and not to use it for promoting illegal goods.

“We won’t let bad actors jeopardize the integrity of our platform for almost a billion users,” he wrote.

  • TRAI’s Big Step To Curb Misuse Of URLs In Messages, SMS To Come Into Effect From 1 October |

New Delhi: In a major step to curb the misuse of URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) in messages, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued a Direction on 20th August 2024, instructing all Access Providers to block any traffic containing URLs, APKs (Android Package Kit), or OTT (Over The Top) links that have not been whitelisted. The Direction is set to be implemented by 1st October 2024.

To ensure smooth flow of SMS traffic containing URLs, TRAI advises registered senders to promptly upload their whitelisted URL/APK/OTT links to the portal of the respective Access Providers. So far, over 3,000 registered senders have complied with this requirement by whitelisting more than 70,000 links. Senders who fail to whitelist their links by the due date will not be able to transmit any messages containing URL/APK/OTT links.

This initiative by TRAI is designed to safeguard consumers from unsolicited messages containing malicious links while fostering a transparent and secure communication system. By complying with these new rules, both Access Providers and registered senders can help in creating a more reliable and safe messaging environment.

  • Spam Menace: 3K Registered Senders Whitelist Over 70K Links As Per Centre’s Directive |

New Delhi: More than 3,000 registered senders have whitelisted more than 70,000 URLs, APKs (Android package kit) or OTT (over the top) links as per the government directive to safeguard consumers from unsolicited messages containing malicious links, it was announced on Thursday.

In a major step to curb the misuse of URLs (uniform resource locators) in messages, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had issued a directive on August 20, and then extended it till September 30.

The new rule, instructing all access providers to block any traffic containing URLs, APKs, or OTT links that have not been whitelisted, is set to be implemented by 1st October 2024.

To ensure smooth flow of SMS traffic containing URLs, TRAI advises registered senders to promptly upload their whitelisted URL/APK/OTT links to the portal of the respective Access Providers.

“So far, over 3,000 registered senders have complied with this requirement by whitelisting more than 70,000 links. Senders who fail to whitelist their links by the due date will not be able to transmit any messages containing URL/APK/OTT links,” said the Ministry of Communications.

This initiative is designed to foster a transparent and secure communication system.

“By complying with these new rules, both Access Providers and registered senders can help in creating a more reliable and safe messaging environment,” said the telecom regulator.

Whitelisting is a cybersecurity strategy under which only pre-approved or trusted users, entities, or actions are allowed to operate on a system or network. By preventing unauthorised access, whitelisting can greatly reduce the risk of malware infection and cyber intrusion.

Telecom service providers blocked over 50 entities and disconnected more than 2.75 lakh mobile numbers and telecom resources earlier this month.

The TRAI has also introduced punitive measures for non-compliance. Content templates registered under the wrong category will be blacklisted, and repeated offenses will lead to a one-month suspension of the sender’s services.

  • Fake ‘Brad Pitt’ Scams Two Women Out Of Rs 3 Crore With False Romance |

New Delhi: Scammers impersonating famous celebrities are nothing new. In a shocking case, Spanish police have arrested five individuals for defrauding two women out of €325,000 (over Rs 3 crore) by pretending to be Hollywood star Brad Pitt. The scammers reached out to the victims via emails and WhatsApp. They faked romantic interest and convinced them to invest in bogus projects.

How did the scammers find and target their victims?

The scammers initially connected with the women through a Brad Pitt fan page. They built a fake sense of trust and used emotional manipulation to execute their scheme. They carefully researched the victims’ online profiles, especially on social media to find and target those who seemed vulnerable.

    Targeting Vulnerable Individuals

Spanish authorities disclosed that the scammers specifically targeted women going through emotional struggles and personal difficulties. “The cybercriminals studied the victims’ social media profiles and created psychological profiles, discovering that both women were vulnerable, lonely, and battling depression,” Spain’s Guardia Civil police told The Guardian.

One victim from Andalusia was scammed out of €175,000 (around Rs 2 crore), while another victim from the Basque Country lost €150,000 (over Rs 1 crore).

It is aimed at tackling the increasing problem of unwanted calls from scammers and telemarketers. The feature simplifies blocking these calls. The feature which was earlier available on Android has now been added to the premium options for iPhone users.

    What is Auto-Block Spam?

The ‘Auto-Block Spam’ feature helps stop spam calls from reaching your phone by automatically blocking numbers identified by Truecaller as spam. How Does Auto-Block Spam Function?

You can turn on Auto-Block Spam by going to the ‘Protect’ option in the app. This feature lets you automatically reject incoming fraudulent calls. Truecaller gives you the option to block either the ‘Top Spammers’ or ‘All Spammers’, helping you avoid unwanted calls without any hassle.

    Premium-only perks

The Auto-Block Spam feature saves users from the hassle of manually dealing with spam calls but is only available to Truecaller Premium subscribers. Along with this, premium users enjoy benefits like priority customer support, an ad-free experience, and Live Caller ID on iOS.

    AI Call Scanner

Earlier in May, Truecaller launched the “AI Call Scanner” for Android. This tool uses AI to detect spam calls, even those using cloned or synthesized voices. It’s designed to differentiate between human and AI-generated voices, helping users stay alert to potential scams and frauds.
