Chhattisgarh: Prisoner lodged in sub-jail dies, relatives make serious allegations

Gaurav Jain, Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi. A prisoner lodged in Chhattisgarh’s Pendra Road sub-jail has died. Regarding the death of the prisoner, his family members made serious allegations against the jail administration and created a ruckus in the district hospital. The family members have accused the jail administration of beating the prisoner and not providing timely treatment. The jail administration has denied all these allegations. On receiving information about the incident, the police reached the spot and started investigation by registering a case.

The family members of the deceased prisoner said that on the night of 24 February, the police arrested Ashok Sonkar (23 years) on charges of theft. When they went to meet him in jail, he used to tell them that he had a cough. When the family asked for medicines, the jail officials said that they would get him medicines, the doctor is here. But they did not let him take the medicines.

In this case, Deputy Jail Prahari Sevak Ram Sonkar told that around 10:30-11:00 pm, the prisoner’s health suddenly deteriorated. He was vomiting. On receiving this information, the Deputy Jail Prahari immediately ordered to take him to the District Hospital. After which he was admitted to the hospital and given medicines. The doctors said to refer him to SIMS. Because the prisoner had a problem like blockage. After which, while preparations were going on to take him to SIMS, he died.
