IG Garg has expressed concern by writing a letter. He has talked about stopping the fraudulent activities taking place due to fake customer care numbers displayed on Google search pages and taking necessary action. Garg said through the letter that cyber thugs committing various types of cyber crimes are using the Google platform to impersonate customer care numbers of major banks, insurance companies, hotels, wallets, UPI, gas agencies, medical and health services and other essential services. They are trying to cheat people in the name of updating. Google ads are often used by fraudsters to make fake numbers appear higher in Google search results.

Information sought from Google regarding action

IG said, users trust Google search results. They consider these fake numbers as real customer care numbers and as a result, they fall into the trap of fraudsters by providing their sensitive and confidential information. The IG told Google through various sections of the IT Act that considering the impact of such fraudulent activities on society, it is important for Google to take all necessary steps so that citizens can be protected from such frauds. Google has also been asked to take serious action on this issue and information regarding the action taken.
