Kidnapping and murder case in Raipur: Life sentence of accused remains intact, High Court rejects appeal

Virendra Gahwai, Bilaspur. The High Court has justified the life imprisonment given to four accused in the case of kidnapping and murder for ransom of Rs 2 crore. Rejecting the appeal of the accused, the Division Bench has found the strong chain of circumstantial evidence sufficient for conviction.

Actually, Prakash Sharma was murdered in Raipur on 16 April 2018. Police investigation revealed that the deceased’s cousin Amrit Sharma along with three others Bhojraj Nand, Anil Kumar Behera and Chitrasen Behera conspired to kidnap Prakash for ransom. Accidentally killing him in the process. Their intention was to collect a ransom of Rs 2 crore from Prakash’s father Satyanarayan Sharma, but their plan failed when they gave chloroform to Prakash and he died of suffocation.

The Sixth Additional Sessions Judge, Raipur found all the accused guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The accused presented an appeal in the High Court challenging the sentence given by the lower court. The division bench of Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Bibhu Dutta Guru rejected all the appeals and upheld the decision of the trial court.
