Raipur. Tobacco consumption causes more than 13 lakh deaths in India every year, which is equivalent to 3500 deaths per day. Apart from deaths and diseases caused by tobacco, it also affects the economic and social development of the country. Dr. Yusuf Memon said that on the occasion of World Cancer Day, an awareness program was organized under the joint aegis of Sanjeevani Cancer Care Foundation and Voluntary Health Association of India on 4th February. Dr. Yusuf Memon, Senior Cancer Surgeon and Founder, Sanjeevani Cancer Care Foundation, further said that not only is tobacco use a major risk factor for many types of cancer and diseases, but the smoker also harms his/her own health through second hand smoking. It also increases the risk of cancer for those around you.

Dr. Rakesh Gupta said that the Indian Medical Association is committed to spreading awareness about cancer prevention in Chhattisgarh. He advised people to stay away from tobacco products, excessive alcohol consumption, and other cancer causing factors and go for regular check ups and consult experts.

Throwing light on the increasing cases of cancer in Chhattisgarh, Dr. Arpan Chaturmohta and Dr. Diwakar Pandey said that it is a matter of concern that nowadays the usage of gutkha, beedi, gudhakku, khaini and other tobacco products is leading to oral cancer as well as other cancers. The cases are increasing.

Dr. Diwakar Pandey told that sudden weight loss, feeling of difficulty in breathing or swallowing, feeling of excessive fatigue, anemia, lump in the body, change in skin, change in the habits of excreta, mouth ulcers, etc. If signs like non-healing blisters, bleeding from stool, urine or vagina appear, you should immediately contact a doctor.

Dr. Aniket Thoke and Dr. Rakesh Mishra told that nowadays chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy are also given along with radiation and it plays an important role in eliminating and controlling cancer even in advanced stage cancer. Sushmita Srivastava and Adhvesh Malik from Voluntary Health Association said that despite knowing the ill effects of tobacco products, people are not able to reduce tobacco consumption. During the programme, a short film was also shown and people were advised to be aware. In the program, former cancer victims also shared their experiences and advised people to stay away from tobacco products.
