Twenty-three years after its release, ‘Zindagi Khubsoorat Hai’ remains a film that challenges conventional expectations. Director Manoj Punj, in his debut, creates a world where imagination takes flight, unburdened by the pressures of commercial cinema. The film’s ability to resonate stems from its commitment to its core message, despite some thematic complexities that occasionally disrupt its flow.
The film explores the essence of life, as seen through the eyes of the characters. Amar (Gurdas Maan), the protagonist, embarks on a journey of self-discovery within a multi-layered narrative. The central story features a clash between feudal forces and the repercussions of a disrupted wedding. Amar’s efforts to connect with a mentally challenged girl, Jameela, through music provide an uplifting subplot.
‘Zindagi Khubsoorat Hai’ also portrays the story of Shalu (Tabu), a prostitute seeking redemption. Amar’s attempts to help her echo themes of transformation. The relationship between Amar and Shalu is the heart of the film. The film reaches its most poetic moments when the couple escapes to the serene valleys of Himachal Pradesh, where Shalu imagines her simple domestic life.
Tabu and Gurdas Maan deliver powerful performances. Tabu’s portrayal is particularly noteworthy, showcasing a strong, independent woman. Gurdas Maan’s performance is compelling. While his singing is done in different voices, he connects with his audience through his acting.
While the film’s ambitions are clear, the multi-layered script presents challenges for the director. The cinematography and choreography are excellent. The film, however, could have benefitted from tighter editing. Despite these issues, the film offers a memorable exploration of the human experience. The exploration of these themes ensures the film remains a subject of discussion.
Suraj Sanim’s script probes the depths of human experience, yet struggles to find a conclusive ending. Amar confesses that he has seen ‘Devdas’ seventeen times; one wonders how many times he would watch ‘Zindagi Khoobsoorat Hai’.
