The release of Diljit Dosanjh’s film, ‘Punjab 95’, a cinematic depiction of the turbulent 1990s in Punjab, is being held up by the CBFC. The film, which focuses on the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, has been met with resistance, including numerous requested cuts and a title alteration. Director Honey Trehan and lead actor Dosanjh are determined to release the film without these alterations, viewing it as a vital narrative about human rights. The filmmakers see the film as essential viewing for all Indians, highlighting the importance of confronting the past. Dosanjh has expressed his dedication to using his position as an entertainer to bring attention to significant, often overlooked, issues. The CBFC has asked for 127 cuts before granting a censor certificate. The film was previously announced for an international release, however, this decision was reversed. The director, Honey Trehan, emphasized the film’s importance by saying it is a story that must be heard and if the errors of judgement in our past are not looked at, the same mistakes will be made again and again.
