Marking its 15th anniversary, ‘We Are Family’ is an urban fable told with remarkable subtlety. While based on ‘Stepmom,’ the film skillfully avoids excessive melodrama, except for the climactic finale. The strength of the film lies in the performances of Kajol, Kareena Kapoor, and Arjun Rampal, who bring depth to their roles. Kajol’s portrayal of a woman facing mortality is deeply moving, while Kareena Kapoor delivers a career-defining performance, redefining the ‘Other Woman’ in Hindi cinema. The screenplay writers deserve credit for crafting a character that is complex and relatable. The film’s success lies in its ability to explore themes of family separation and reconciliation with sensitivity and care.
