Amidst a gathering of global naval heavyweights, India seized the reins of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) at its 9th Conclave in Visakhapatnam on February 20. The smooth transition from Royal Thai Navy representatives spotlighted India’s pivotal role in fostering ocean-wide harmony.
Sixteen years on from its inaugural 2008-2010 presidency, India’s comeback is charged with purpose. Naval Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi urged elevating IONS to a hands-on hub for maritime defense, disaster response, and shared intelligence.
With delegates from 33 Indian Ocean-linked countries—including far-flung Atlantic and Pacific players—the event pulsed with urgency for collective vigilance. Standouts included the Indian Navy-crafted IONS website rollout for robust connectivity, plus fresh memberships for Philippines (observer) and Oman (HADR).
Forward momentum includes India’s push for IONS exercises, IOS Sagar operations, and ongoing info-exchange sessions, all geared to cement trust and synergy.
Strategic observers see this as a game-changer, promising robust, joint defenses for the Indian Ocean in an era of heightened risks.
