Srinagar witnessed a peaceful Ashura procession, observed by the Shia Muslim community, in remembrance of Imam Hussein’s martyrdom. The procession, a key event in the Muharram commemorations, saw participation from Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who distributed water to the mourners. The route spanned from Bota Kadal to Imambara Zadibal. The gathering, held under heavy security, honored Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, who died in 680 CE. The local administration facilitated the procession while prioritizing communal harmony. The Lieutenant Governor also offered a ‘chadar’ to Zuljanah, Imam Hussein’s horse. The police and CRPF were deployed to ensure order. The procession’s allowance for the third year in a row reflects growing normalcy, following a lengthy ban. The procession ended at Imambara Zadibal, with mourners paying respect to Zuljanah.
