Rahul Mamkootathil, a Congress MLA from Palakkad, is facing suspension and intense scrutiny following the surfacing of an audio clip that allegedly reveals him threatening a pregnant woman and coercing her into having an abortion. The allegations against Mamkootathil also involve accusations of sending offensive and sexually suggestive messages to several women, including actor-model-turned-journalist Rini Ann George and transgender woman Avantika. They also claimed the MLA invited them to 5-star hotels. The suspension from the Congress party came in the wake of these allegations. The leaked audio clip purportedly contains a conversation where the MLA expresses his worries about the pregnancy affecting his life and career. He also makes veiled threats to the woman if she resists his demands. The MLA’s alleged actions have triggered a political storm, with the opposition BJP demanding his resignation from the state assembly. The audio clip, which has not been independently verified, has gained widespread attention online. The conversation in the audio begins with the woman questioning Mamkootathil’s intent to terminate the pregnancy without her consent. He responds by saying, that her permission is irrelevant because she isn’t thinking about the consequences. The woman then states that she will face the consequences regardless, to which Rahul responds with threats. The audio clip also features threats, with Mamkootathil allegedly stating he could “kill” the woman, and telling her that she is a woman and cannot live, that the situation would destroy her life and his career. Rini Ann George reported the harassment to the Congress leadership. Avantika and Rini also made claims of inappropriate behavior. The party leadership is expected to seek a written explanation from Mamkootathil, and expulsion is a possibility if his explanation is unsatisfactory. The MLA is expected to take leave and avoid attending the assembly session.
