Bangladesh Airbase Upgrade: Chinese Radar Eyes India’s Critical Corridor

Concerns are escalating in India as Bangladesh proceeds with plans to install a Chinese-made air defence radar system at Lalmonirhat Airbase. This base is strategically positioned near the Siliguri corridor, often referred to as India’s ‘Chicken’s Neck,’ a critical land link. Despite Indian reservations, construction of a new hangar for fighter jets and the radar system is progressing. Parts of the radar have reportedly reached the site, with efforts focused on upgrading existing infrastructure. This development follows a high-level Indian military intelligence visit to Bangladeshi airbases, aimed at assessing regional security dynamics. Security experts note that while Bangladesh’s intentions may not be hostile, such deployments could potentially be leveraged by rivals of India. Earlier reports indicated meetings between Bangladeshi military officials and a Chinese firm concerning the acquisition of advanced weaponry, including surface-to-air missiles and radar. The JSG-400 TDR radar system, known for its integration with missile defence platforms, is a key component of this suspected upgrade. Simultaneously, Bangladesh has been bolstering its air surveillance with the recent activation of a long-range radar system in Bogura, further underscoring its commitment to enhancing aerial defence.
