With the Bihar assembly elections approaching, the Election Commission is taking proactive measures. The commission has issued a list of registered, unrecognized political parties and requested their explanations. The commission has also specified a date for this process.
The Chief Electoral Officer’s notification highlights the focus on registered unrecognized political parties that have not participated in any elections in the last six years. These parties receive benefits under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The commission has made it clear that it will issue show-cause notices to such political parties and, after considering their responses, could proceed with delisting them.
All listed political parties are required to present their arguments before the Chief Electoral Officer of Bihar by 3 p.m. on September 1st, along with any supporting evidence. This information will then be used to prepare a report to be submitted to the Election Commission of India.
