Amidst a brewing political storm in Punjab, the Union Home Ministry has stepped in to clarify that a proposed move to bring Chandigarh under the President’s control is still under deliberation and no final decision has been reached. Reports suggesting a shift in Chandigarh’s administrative framework had triggered widespread opposition. The Ministry explicitly stated that no bill related to this proposal would be tabled during the forthcoming Winter Session. The current proposal focuses on simplifying the legislative process for the Union Territory. Authorities reassured that the governance and administrative arrangements of Chandigarh, as well as its long-standing ties with Punjab and Haryana, would not be affected. They pledged that any future decision would be taken only after comprehensive consultations with all stakeholders, ensuring the interests of Chandigarh are paramount. The government stressed that there is no cause for alarm regarding this matter.
