The Chennai Metro Rail Corporation (CMRL) is set to phase out old metro cards starting August 1st. The new system will see the introduction of the Singara Chennai Card, which will replace the old ones. Commuters will no longer be able to recharge the old cards. The Singara Chennai Card, built on the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) framework, will be the only accepted method for top-ups at all 41 metro stations from next month. Existing balances on old cards can be used until they are exhausted. Once the balance drops below ₹50, these cards must be submitted at the ticket counter of any metro station, after which they will become unusable. A new Singara Card will then be issued at no cost, with the balance and security deposit from the old card automatically transferred. The Singara card, launched in 2023, adheres to the NCMC standards set by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, serving as a unified payment option for transport services, including buses, metro, and toll booths. CMRL plans to set up help desks at each metro station to assist commuters during this transition. The QR code-based ticketing system used through mobile apps will not be impacted by this change.
