Online scams continue to plague individuals across India, with criminals using increasingly sophisticated methods to steal money. In a recent incident, a resident of Raipur, identified as Devendra Singh Rism, experienced a significant financial loss due to a WhatsApp-based cyberattack. Rism received a seemingly innocuous wedding invitation via WhatsApp. However, upon attempting to open the e-card, his phone was hacked. The phone began to blink erratically, and messages indicated that money was being withdrawn from his account. Rism immediately took action by blocking his bank account and reporting the crime. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter. The stolen amount totaled Rs 4.80 lakh. This incident serves as a cautionary tale about the risks associated with opening unfamiliar links and attachments, particularly those received through messaging applications.
