Tragedy struck a coal mine in Chhattisgarh’s Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur (MCB) district on Monday, with an explosion injuring three workers, two of whom are women. The incident happened at the Chirmiri open cast coal mine, operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL). Preliminary reports indicate the blast occurred during preparations for a scheduled blasting operation, around mid-afternoon. A group of workers was laying explosives on the coal seam when the detonation happened prematurely. The force of the explosion sent rock fragments scattering, impacting workers and vehicles present in the vicinity. All injured personnel were immediately taken to the SECL regional hospital located in Kurasia, Chirmiri. SECL officials confirmed that the injuries are minor and the affected individuals are stable and receiving treatment. An investigation has been initiated to determine the root cause of the unexpected explosion. Investigators are exploring possibilities ranging from equipment malfunction to procedural oversights or human error. Safety protocols are being rigorously reviewed, and the affected area has been temporarily cordoned off. Operations at the mine have been put on hold while comprehensive safety assessments are conducted to ensure the well-being of all personnel.
