Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta made headlines by spearheading metro station renamings that capture the city’s grassroots essence. As SNA head, her team pored over DMRC’s DPR for 21 stations, finalizing a mix of retentions, tweaks, and total makeovers on February 22.
Twelve names sailed through untouched: Majlis Park, Bhalswa, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Deepali Chowk, Yamuna Vihar, Bhajanpura, Khajuri Khas, Sur Ghat, Jharoda Majra, Burari, Pushpanjali, Maujpur-Babarpur. Seven got refined for crystal-clear identity—Uttari Pitampura-Prashant Vihar (was Prashant Vihar), Jagatpur-Vazirabad, Nanak Pyau-Derawal Nagar, Khanpur-Vayusenabad, Nanaksar-Sonia Vihar, Shri Ram Mandir Mayur Vihar, Mangolpuri Kalan-West Enclave.
Two stations underwent complete rebirths: Haiderpur Village from North Pitampura, and Madhuban Chowk for the Pitampura site, honoring age-old landmarks.
‘We’ve woven in local history, community voices, and practical navigation,’ Gupta explained. The authority’s deep dives ensured no stone unturned, balancing tradition with modernity.
This isn’t a one-off; it’s part of a dynamic policy open to future community-backed changes. Commuters stand to gain from intuitive names that cut confusion and boost belonging. As Delhi’s metro web expands, these decisions cement its role as a true reflection of the capital’s diverse tapestry.
