A major controversy has arisen in Dombivli, Maharashtra, after BJP officials reportedly forced Congress worker Prakash ‘Mama’ Pagare to wear a sari. Pagare is currently hospitalized. Rahul Gandhi, a senior Congress leader and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, spoke to Pagare on Thursday to check on his health. Gandhi reassured Pagare, stating, “Mama, don’t be afraid, we are with you.” He added that he was aware of the situation through Balasaheb Thorat. Gandhi acknowledged Pagare’s 50 years of service to the Congress party, expressing his pride. Pagare, moved by the conversation, invited Gandhi to visit him in Mumbai. The incident has triggered widespread discussion, extending beyond local circles to encompass state and national politics, leading to resentment among Congress members. Gandhi’s direct contact has offered encouragement to local party officials.
The situation unfolded following Pagare’s sharing of an edited image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In response, BJP officials allegedly summoned him and forced him to wear a sari in Dombivli. The incident has drawn attention throughout Kalyan-Dombivli and the broader state. Rahul Gandhi received information from Maharashtra Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat, which prompted his direct communication with Pagare. Gandhi assured the hospitalized Dalit leader of the party’s support. Pagare expressed his confidence that Rahul Gandhi would visit him when he visits Mumbai. The Kalyan police are currently investigating the matter and have filed an FIR. Pagare’s statement was recorded in the hospital. He stated that he immediately contacted Balasaheb Thorat after the incident and that Thorat informed Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi then stated he would personally speak to Mama.
