Following Eid-ul-Adha, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reported the arrest of 16 people involved in illegal cattle slaughter. Cattle parts were found in multiple locations, and five illegal slaughtering spots were discovered in Cachar and Karimganj districts. Sarma underscored the state’s commitment to communal harmony while ensuring law and order. The Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021 restricts cattle slaughter in areas with significant populations of Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs, as well as near religious sites. Protests erupted in Hojai, with both Hindu and Muslim groups staging demonstrations and clashing with police. Authorities are examining incidents involving the alleged throwing of meat at various premises, including near Cotton University and a temple in Dhubri.
