Gandhi Doubles Down on ‘Vote Theft’ Claims, Linking BJP to Alleged Irregularities

Rahul Gandhi, addressing the ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar, accused the BJP of engaging in ‘vote theft’, a practice he asserted began in Gujarat and became a nationwide phenomenon in 2014. Gandhi made these remarks in Madhubani, emphasizing his commitment to truth and fact-based statements. He pointedly questioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s optimistic forecasts regarding the BJP’s prolonged tenure in power. According to Gandhi, Shah’s certainty raised questions about the means by which the BJP expects to remain in power for such an extended period. Gandhi alleged that ‘vote chori’ (vote theft) originated in Gujarat and expanded nationally in 2014, and subsequently spread to other states. Furthermore, the Leader of Opposition criticized a 2023 law that provided immunity to the Chief Election Commissioner, claiming it was a deliberate attempt to protect those involved in vote manipulation. He pointed to alleged manipulation of election dates in Maharashtra and Haryana assembly elections as evidence. Gandhi also noted the BJP’s control over the Election Commissioner appointment process. The ongoing 16-day ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar, co-led by Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, aims to address concerns surrounding voter list irregularities, covering over 1,300 km and 20 districts before its conclusion in Patna on September 1.
