Srinagar is facing a severe heatwave, with temperatures hitting record highs. Friday marked the second consecutive day of unprecedented heat, with the temperature peaking at 35.5 degrees Celsius, exceeding the previous day’s 35.2 degrees. This has been confirmed as the highest temperature for this time of year. The current temperatures are the highest recorded in June since 2005 and the warmest since 1988. The persistent heatwave, which has lasted four days, has prompted the government to adjust school timings. The Education Minister announced changes to school schedules. Starting June 21, schools within Srinagar city will operate from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, while schools outside the city will operate from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Additionally, a ten-day summer break will begin on July 1 and continue until July 10 for both government and private schools in the Kashmir division, due to the severe heat conditions. The government will review the weather and determine if an extension is necessary. Forecasts from the local meteorological department predict rain and thunderstorms, which may offer some relief.
