The Indian Coast Guard has received the ICGS Akshar from Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), marking a significant step in enhancing India’s maritime security. Built as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, the ICGS Akshar is the second of eight advanced Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs). The vessel measures 51.43 meters in length and 8 meters in width, with a displacement of around 330 tons. Powered by two marine diesel engines coupled with controllable pitch propellers (CPP) – a first for this class of vessel – the Akshar promises superior speed and maneuverability. It is capable of exceeding 27 knots and has a range of 1,500 nautical miles. The vessel will be crewed by 6 officers and 35 sailors. The ICGS Akshar is designed for a range of critical missions, including safeguarding fisheries, monitoring the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), conducting coastal patrols, deterring smuggling, countering piracy, and executing search and rescue operations. GSL’s handover of the ICGS Akshar is a testament to the progress of Make in India and the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, bolstering the nation’s maritime defense capabilities.
