For the first time, India’s private sector is taking a major step into helicopter manufacturing. Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) will partner with Airbus to set up a Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Vemgal, Karnataka, for the production of H125 helicopters. This initiative not only signifies a new direction for India’s civil aviation but also aims to fulfill the requirements of the armed forces. The Indian Army has been seeking light, multi-role helicopters for a considerable period, specifically for high-altitude deployments along the Himalayas.
TASL will oversee the complete process, encompassing manufacturing, assembly, integration, and final flight testing within India. The initial ‘Make in India’ H125 helicopter deliveries are scheduled to begin in early 2027. These helicopters are expected to contribute significantly to emergency medical services, disaster relief, tourism, law enforcement, and passenger transport.
