A 30-year-old Indian engineer from Telangana, Mohammad Nizamuddin, was killed in a shooting incident in Santa Clara, California on September 3rd. The incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute with his roommate. His father, Mohammad Hasanuddin, was informed of the tragic event and has since appealed to India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for help in bringing his son’s remains back to India.
Reports indicate the altercation involved a disagreement over the air conditioning. The situation escalated, leading to the involvement of the police. Tragically, Nizamuddin was shot during the encounter and later succumbed to his injuries.
His father has expressed his shock and confusion regarding the circumstances, particularly questioning why the police opened fire. He has contacted the External Affairs Minister, seeking assistance from the Indian embassy in California to facilitate the return of his son’s body to Mahbubnagar.
According to a friend of Nizamuddin, the initial argument escalated into a physical confrontation involving knives. Witnesses claim that after police arrived, one person cooperated with the officers’ instructions, but Nizamuddin did not, leading to the shooting. The police have stated they encountered Nizamuddin holding his roommate with a knife and that the shooting occurred during an encounter.
Nizamuddin was declared dead at the hospital, while his roommate is currently receiving medical attention. The incident has raised questions and concerns about the police response.
