Thursday brought cheers to Assam’s farming community as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised irrigation’s role in overhauling the rural economy during the past five years. In an X post, he elaborated on how agricultural infrastructure upgrades have made irrigation the backbone of reliable farming.
With 772 new minor schemes operational, over 60,000 hectares now enjoy assured irrigation. Sarma shared, ‘Assam’s fields, previously at the mercy of monsoons, are flourishing like never before.’
The Dhansiri Irrigation Project exemplifies progress, providing stable water access to lands in 175 villages, set to elevate crop production and generate rural jobs. Integrating solar technology has expedited completions and promoted green practices.
This has slashed reliance on unpredictable weather, enabling year-round farming, higher incomes, and robust water systems. Villages report growing employment and sustainable resource use.
Echoing the state’s inclusive growth strategy, these projects deliver tangible results through accountability. Analysts foresee irrigation expansions countering climate variability effectively. Sarma vowed continued dedication to infrastructure that percolates benefits to every farmer, cementing irrigation’s place in Assam’s vision for agricultural self-sufficiency and enduring rural vitality.
