Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP has reached new heights, but its influence isn’t universal. While the party enjoys power in 21 states, there are still five states where the BJP has not formed a government. These include West Bengal, Punjab, Kerala, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu. Elections are scheduled in three of these states in 2026: West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. Punjab’s elections are slated for 2027, and Telangana’s for 2028. When Modi assumed office in 2014, the BJP’s presence was limited to a few states. The NDA’s influence has expanded significantly since then. The BJP’s progress has been consistent. Currently, the BJP governs independently in several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Odisha, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Delhi (union territory). The NDA also governs in Maharashtra, Goa, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Assam, and Puducherry (union territory) through alliances. In the last 11 years, the BJP and the NDA have formed governments for the first time in Haryana, Maharashtra, Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, and Odisha.
