New Chief Justice of India: Surya Kant Takes the Helm

The Indian judiciary has a new leader as Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India. He assumes the highest judicial post following the retirement of Justice B.R. Gavai on Sunday. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office during a formal ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Key dignitaries, including Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with members of the Union cabinet, were present to witness the transition. Justice Kant’s term as Chief Justice will extend for nearly 15 months, concluding on February 9, 2027, when he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 65. His appointment comes after a notable career marked by his involvement in significant legal pronouncements, such as those pertaining to Article 370, electoral processes in Bihar, and the Pegasus surveillance case. In a heartwarming display of respect and tradition, Justice Surya Kant bowed and touched the feet of his elder family members after taking his oath. The international judicial community was also represented, with Chief Justices and senior judges from Bhutan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, and Sri Lanka attending the event, signifying strong global judicial ties.
