Over the past five years, the number of Indian citizens who have died in Canada has exceeded 1,000. The majority of these deaths were due to natural causes, including old age and illness. The Ministry of External Affairs, responding to inquiries, stated that between 2020 and 2024, a total of 1,203 Indian nationals passed away in Canada. In addition to natural causes, deaths were also attributed to accidents, violence, suicide, and murder. The Indian government works to ensure the repatriation of mortal remains to India, and has facilitated the return of 757 sets of remains and ashes during this time. The Ministry of External Affairs has a set standard operating procedure (SOP) in place to assist distressed Indian citizens, collaborating with Indian embassies and the central government to address issues such as deaths, local cremation or burial, and claims related to insurance or compensation.
