In response to the ongoing flood crisis, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has established a high-powered committee to manage relief and rescue operations in the affected regions. The committee, composed of top-level officers from key government departments, will be based in Amritsar and other flood-hit districts, providing day-to-day supervision. The Chief Minister, during a high-level meeting, highlighted that the state government is determined to aid those affected by the floods. He directed the Deputy Commissioners and other officials to follow the committee’s guidance to deliver immediate assistance. The Chief Secretary has been instructed to tour the flood-affected areas, ensuring the government machinery works efficiently. The primary goal is to expedite relief efforts and offer substantial support to those impacted. The state is grappling with significant water flow from mountainous areas, with the Ravi River experiencing record inflows, surpassing levels seen during the 1988 floods. The government has reached out to neighboring states, requesting the diversion of excess water. The Indian Army is assisting in rescue operations across multiple districts alongside the administration, utilizing advanced equipment. The NDRF has deployed 17 teams to aid in rescue efforts, with continuous operations focused on rescuing people, damage assessment, and disease prevention. A dedicated workforce is working around the clock to complete the relief and rescue work. The focus includes repairing breaches, providing medical care, and preventing disease spread. Water tankers will supply potable water, and water quality testing will be conducted to avoid health crises. Essential supplies, including food, will be provided to marooned villages. Pumping operations are being prioritized to remove floodwaters. Damage assessments are underway for infrastructure. Medical relief will be available in various forms, with mobile medical units deployed. Specialized teams will target dengue larvae and educate the public on disease prevention. Veterinary teams will address animal health needs, and extensive sanitation measures will be implemented to control the spread of diseases.
