Rahul Mamkootathil Faces Charges After Assault Complaint

Kerala police have filed a case against suspended Congress legislator Rahul Mamkootathil following a formal complaint of sexual assault. The allegations include severe misconduct and coercing the accuser into an abortion. The case was registered at Valiyamala Police Station based on an extensive statement provided by the woman. Investigators are actively pursuing further details and assuring a comprehensive examination of all allegations. The complainant had previously approached Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to present her grievances against the suspended politician. Official statements indicate that more information will be released post-initial inquiry. The Congress party in Kerala has stated its position, with leaders emphasizing that the legal proceedings will continue without interference. AICC in-charge for the state, Deepa Dasmunsi, pointed out Mamkootathil’s suspension and reiterated that justice will prevail through legal channels. Dasmunsi also commented that the complainant’s decision to approach the Chief Minister first, rather than the police, was noteworthy. Separately, senior Congress figure K Muraleedharan clarified that the suspension does not prevent Mamkootathil from campaigning for party candidates in local elections. He emphasized, however, that participation in party forums and joint appearances with leaders remain prohibited during his suspension.
