Sanjay Singh, a prominent Aam Aadmi Party leader, is currently under house arrest in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The house arrest was implemented to prevent Singh and fellow party member Imran Hussain, the Jammu and Kashmir in-charge, from staging a demonstration against the detention of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik. Singh had publicly condemned Malik’s arrest under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA), labeling it as both illegal and unconstitutional. He had planned to hold a press conference in Srinagar to address the issue. However, authorities placed Singh under house arrest at a government guest house before the press conference could take place. Singh used his X (formerly Twitter) account to announce his detention, including a tweet expressing his disappointment that former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah was not permitted to meet with him. Singh also posted on X, declaring that he was in Srinagar to protest the unlawful arrest of Mehraj Malik and that speaking out for democracy is his constitutional right.
