Schools Shut in Chennai as Orange Alert Signals Heavy Downpour

Heavy overnight rainfall has led to widespread waterlogging in Chennai and its neighboring districts, prompting an orange alert from the IMD and immediate school closures. Kancheepuram district is also likely to close schools pending official orders. The IMD’s orange alert indicates a high probability of heavy to very heavy rainfall across these areas, driven by a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal. This alert extends to Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Karaikal. Lighter conditions are expected in most southern Tamil Nadu districts, though a yellow alert is in place for several, including Villupuram and Cuddalore. Chennai residents can expect a day of continued cloud cover, significant rain, and temperatures around 29-30°C. Unlike Tamil Nadu, other major states like Delhi NCR and Uttar Pradesh are not issuing weather-related school holidays.
