Urban India’s traffic nightmares—rushed drivers flouting rules amid gridlock—are being tamed in Gujarat through high-tech innovation. The Safe Gujarat Campaign equips police with pervasive CCTV at choke points, overseen by advanced Traffic Monitoring Centers that digitize everything from surveillance to penalties.
Drivers are feeling the impact firsthand. ‘Rushed out without my helmet; e-challan followed,’ said Ravindra Patel of Ahmedabad’s Bopal area. ‘Cleared it instantly at the control room.’ Vyomesh Babulal shared, ‘An e-memo arrived post-violation. Sorted it at the office in moments—now fully compliant.’
Echoing PM Modi’s digital ethos, CM Bhupendra Patel’s e-challan and Transport Portal have boosted coffers: from Rs 153.78 crore in 2023, to Rs 195.87 crore in 2024, hitting Rs 231 crore in 2025. Three-year haul exceeds Rs 581 crore via 1.45 crore challans; 2025 saw 85.71 lakh issued (76.46 lakh online), Ahmedabad topping at 40.2 lakh.
DCP Naresh Kanjaria of Ahmedabad traffic lauded, ‘Tech was our need. Control room e-monitoring nabs offenders instantly for helmets, wrong driving, parking woes. It also cuts accidents via quick response and fortifies overall policing.’
Prioritizing lives over ledgers, the system alerts to crash spots for immediate help. Gujarat’s blend of smart tech and online efficiency is forging safer streets, disciplined motorists, and a blueprint for India’s traffic future.
