Software Engineer Arrested in Pune Over Terror Network Allegations

A software engineer working in Pune has been taken into custody by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on suspicion of ties to Al Qaeda and involvement in youth radicalization. Zubair Hangargekar was arrested in the Kondhwa neighborhood and subsequently presented in court, where he was ordered to remain in police custody until November 4. Authorities stated that Hangargekar was allegedly engaged in anti-national activities and was planning terrorist attacks in various Indian cities, with a particular focus on Maharashtra. During a search of his premises, law enforcement reportedly discovered materials intended for radicalizing young minds. This arrest is part of a larger crackdown on suspected terrorist activities in the region. Earlier, on October 27, four individuals were detained at Pune Railway Station. Furthermore, on October 9, ATS teams conducted raids across Pune, seizing electronic gadgets and documents that suggested a wider network. The recent arrests, including two individuals in Delhi and Bhopal connected to the Islamic State, highlight the ongoing challenge posed by online radicalization and the resurgence of extremist groups.
