Leh police arrested activist Sonam Wangchuk on Friday, September 26, two days after unrest in Ladakh. The arrest is linked to allegations of financial misconduct. Authorities are investigating claims of misused foreign funds and discrepancies within Wangchuk’s NGO and related private institutions. The government believes Wangchuk may have violated the law and diverted funds under the guise of a public movement. The Apex Body Leh, leading the statehood agitation, has clarified that their protests are peaceful and that the violence on September 24 was initiated by a section of youth who got out of control.
