In a landmark decision, the Punjab government has declared Sri Anandpur Sahib, Talwandi Sabo, and the Golden Temple corridor in Amritsar as holy cities. This designation brings with it a strict prohibition on the sale of alcohol, meat, and tobacco in these revered locations. The declaration occurred during a special assembly session convened at Sri Anandpur Sahib, marking the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann emphasized that conferring holy city status will be instrumental in preserving the unique religious and cultural significance of these Sikh pilgrimage sites. A special fund is also planned to support upkeep, cleanliness, and conservation initiatives. This recognition of areas around the three Sikh takhts signifies a historic commitment to protecting Punjab’s spiritual and cultural legacy. Political figures have welcomed the move, underscoring its importance for Sikh heritage globally.
