The Supreme Court has taken a serious view of the recent floods in North India, specifically in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir. Chief Justice B.R. Gavai highlighted the severity of the situation, pointing to the heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding. The court has raised the possibility of illegal deforestation as a contributing factor. The CJI has emphasized that the situation isn’t solely a natural disaster, but potentially a crisis exacerbated by human actions, and has requested a response from the involved states within three weeks. The Solicitor General has also been asked to address the matter.
