The DMK has taken aim at Uttar Pradesh for its consideration of a law that would give married daughters equal rights to their fathers’ agricultural land. The DMK pointed out that Tamil Nadu had already implemented such a law in 1989. The DMK’s newspaper, ‘Murasoli,’ noted that Uttar Pradesh is only now considering the move, which Karunanidhi had initiated 35 years ago by amending the Hindu Succession Act in Tamil Nadu. The editorial mentioned that Periyar E.V. Ramasamy advocated for such rights for women nearly 100 years ago. A resolution demanding equal property rights for women was passed at the first conference of non-Brahmin youths in the Madras Presidency in 1927. The DMK emphasized that Uttar Pradesh’s move indicates the state’s backwardness and urged the government to provide women with their rightful entitlements, despite potential resistance from conservative elements.
