Heartbreaking violence marred a wedding in Punjab’s Tarn Taran as sarpanch Harpinder Singh of AAP was fatally shot by unknown assailants. The attack at Sidhu Farm on the Bathinda-Tarn Taran National Highway has left the community in mourning.
Harpinder, from village Thathian, was reveling at the event when three gunmen ambushed him with relentless firing. He breathed his last at the scene. His cousin Germanjit Singh, attempting to apprehend the attackers, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and is under intensive care.
Upon alert, police descended on the farm near Sarla station. SSP Surinder Lamba briefed: ‘Two strangers attacked during the wedding. Sarpanch died heading to hospital; the pursuer was leg-shot and treated.’
The probe leans towards old enmities, absent any extortion traces. ‘Four teams are active; I’m personally involved. We’ll deliver culprits to the law’s full might,’ Lamba committed.
This follows closely on an Amritsar sarpanch’s savage killing, spotlighting rising perils for local AAP figures. With heightened patrols, police vow to dismantle the threat networks plaguing Punjab’s villages.
