According to officials, the incident of clash took place on Tuesday in Lapangap village on the border between West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya and West Karbi Anglong district of Assam. Officials said one person from Karbi Anglong district was injured in the incident, while no one from Meghalaya was seriously injured.
Police teams from both the states visited the spot and talked to the local people and explained it to them, after which the situation was brought under control. A Meghalaya official said that the police banned the gathering of villagers at the site of the clash. There is peace in this situation, but till Wednesday morning the situation was tense.
“We are coordinating with our counterparts in West Karbi Anglong district of Assam to keep the situation under control,” a senior official of West Jaintia Hills district told PTI.
Deimonmi Lyngdoh, an elder from Lapangap village, claimed that the farmers of the village were working in their paddy fields when Assamese people hiding near the fields attacked them with slingshots and bows and arrows.
He said, “As soon as information about the attack was received, about 250-300 people from our village reached the spot and retaliated. There was tension throughout the day yesterday. He has demanded the district administration to provide security.
At the same time, the local people of Tapat area of Karbi Anglong alleged that when they were working in their fields on Tuesday, about 200 people from the neighboring state of Meghalaya attacked them with slingshots, sticks and daggers. Some videos of the clash have gone viral on social media.
At least six people, including five Meghalaya residents and a forest guard from Assam, were killed in the firing incident on November 22 last year at Mukroh village, located on a disputed stretch of the Assam-Meghalaya interstate border.
Official talks between the two neighboring states are in an advanced stage to reorganize the inter-state border. The chief ministers of both the states are scheduled to meet early next month for another round of talks.
Assam and Meghalaya had signed a border agreement last year to resolve the dispute in six areas of difference. Sources said that talks on the remaining six areas of disagreement are in the advanced stage.
