The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has addressed mounting calls to boycott the upcoming India versus Pakistan match in the Asia Cup 2025, set to take place on September 14 in Dubai. The controversy stems from widespread public anger following the recent Pahalgam Attack. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained the board’s stance, highlighting the necessity of participating in the Asia Cup due to its status as a multinational competition. Saikia likened it to events like the Olympics or FIFA tournaments, stating that a boycott would negatively impact India’s prospects of hosting similar tournaments in the future. He differentiated between bilateral and multilateral events, asserting that while boycotts might be considered in bilateral series, they are not an option for multinational tournaments. He further elaborated on the implications of non-participation, including potential setbacks to India’s bid for the 2030 Olympics and possible repercussions for Indian sports federations. Saikia reiterated the BCCI’s commitment to following central government guidelines, which prioritize participation in multinational events to protect the interests of the sport and its athletes.
