Dream11, the title sponsor for the Indian cricket team’s jersey, is likely to withdraw. This follows the passage of the online gaming bill in the Parliament, which now restricts online games that involve monetary gains. This has impacted Dream11, leading to its potential removal as the jersey’s title sponsor. This could mean the end of its 358 crore rupees deal with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This also casts a shadow on the Indian team’s jersey for the upcoming Asia Cup. The focus now shifts to who will be the next sponsor. Several entities have reportedly shown interest, and the BCCI is expected to announce a decision soon.
Potential Replacements
With Dream11’s potential exit, several major groups are vying for the sponsorship, including Tata Group, Reliance, and Adani Group. Tata already has a strong presence in cricket through its sponsorship of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Reliance Jio is also involved in sports sponsorship and broadcasting. The Adani Group has also been investing heavily in sports ventures.
Additional Contenders
Besides Tata, Reliance, and Adani Group, fintech companies like Zerodha, Angel One, and Grow are also interested. These firms have a robust digital presence. Furthermore, automobile and FMCG sectors may also seek sponsorship opportunities.
Mahindra and Toyota, leading automobile companies, could use cricket sponsorship to boost their reach in India. Brands like Pepsi, known for their historical association with sports, are also contenders.
BCCI’s Response
BCCI secretary Devjit Saikia said the board will comply with Indian laws. If online money-making games are restricted, the board will not take any action against the law. The BCCI will follow every policy set by the central government.
The board will decide on a new jersey sponsor soon. If a new sponsor is not found before the Asia Cup, scheduled to begin on September 9, the Indian team will play in the tournament without a sponsor. The Indian team’s jersey has already been printed with Dream11’s name for the Asia Cup, but will not be used. Dream11 had a 358 crore rupees contract with BCCI in 2023.
