Australia claimed a hard-fought victory over India in the FIH Men’s Pro League 2025-26 Hobart leg, prevailing 5-4 in penalties following a gripping 2-2 draw on February 22 at Tasmania Hockey Centre.
The hosts started aggressively, dominating the circle, but India’s counter-defense was impeccable. Amit Rohidas broke the deadlock in the 15th minute, his drag flick from a penalty corner finding the top corner perfectly.
Halftime approached with India ahead, as Australia’s penalty corner threats were neutralized. Jugraj Singh’s thunderous 43rd-minute effort from a set-piece made it 2-0, showcasing India’s set-piece mastery.
Joel Rintala emerged as Australia’s savior, rifling in goals at 47 and 56 minutes from penalty corners to level affairs. As time waned, Mohit’s virtuoso performance in goal – highlighted by a double save – preserved parity.
The penalty lottery was fierce. Four successful shots each led to a decisive fifth, where Australia’s Snowden stoned Lalage, sparking jubilation among the home fans.
India’s campaign continues Tuesday against Spain. This match underscored the Pro League’s intensity, with both teams raising the bar for international hockey.
