Jammu and Kashmir’s iconic Gulmarg transforms into a winter sports hub as the 6th Khelo India Winter Games launch Monday. Blanketed in fresh powder, the resort hosts a vibrant four-day showdown from February 23-26, showcasing India’s rising winter athletes.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha leads the inauguration for 400 entrants from 30 states and UTs. ‘Gulmarg’s superb snow bodes well for our 400 athletes – success is assured,’ noted J&K Sports Council Secretary Nuzhat Gul.
This Gulmarg edition, the second leg after Leh’s January event, upholds the series’ Himalayan roots – every installment has graced J&K or Ladakh. Medal hunts focus on alpine skiing (entry hotspot), ski mountaineering, Nordic skiing, and snowboarding.
Leh’s winners: Haryana with four skating golds, then Ladakh, Maharashtra, Telangana. The ‘Shaan’ snow leopard mascot evokes agility and resilience, mirroring competitors’ spirits.
With rigorous government inspections, infrastructure is primed. The Games amplify Himalayan legacy, scout prodigies, and propel India toward winter sports excellence on international platforms.
