Navi Mumbai witnessed an unforgettable cricketing spectacle as India triumphed over Australia in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 semi-final, ending the reigning champions’ formidable 15-match winning streak. India’s successful chase of 339 runs in 48.3 overs shattered World Cup records, securing a sensational five-wicket victory and a place in the final. The architects of this historic win were Jemimah Rodrigues and captain Harmanpreet Kaur.
Jemimah Rodrigues delivered a career-defining innings, remaining unbeaten on 127 off 134 balls. Coming in at number three, she displayed immense composure and skill, steering India through the challenging chase. Her significant 167-run partnership with Harmanpreet Kaur (89 runs) was instrumental in dismantling Australia’s bowling attack and hopes of reaching another final.
Post-match, Rodrigues shared her emotions and a surprising detail about her batting position. “I want to thank Jesus, could not do this on my own,” she expressed, acknowledging her support system. “It was really hard this last month… feels like a dream.” She revealed, “Did not know I was batting at three. Was taking a shower, just told them to let me know. Five minutes before entering in, I was told I was batting at three.” This uncertainty added another layer to her remarkable performance.
Rodrigues emphasized her singular focus on team victory. “Today was not about my fifty or my hundred, about making India win.” She bravely spoke about overcoming mental health challenges, including anxiety, which she experienced during the tour, finding solace and strength through her faith. “I have almost cried every day through this tour. Not doing well mentally, going through anxiety. I knew I had to show up, and God took care of everything.”
The chase itself was a testament to India’s resilience. After losing early wickets, Rodrigues and Kaur rebuilt the innings. Crucial dropped catches by Australia further aided India’s cause. Although Kaur was dismissed, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh, and Amanjot Kaur provided essential support, with Amanjot sealing the victory. India now faces South Africa in the final, aiming to clinch their maiden World Cup trophy. Rodrigues’ century was a landmark achievement, placing her alongside elite company in World Cup history.
