Anandkumar Velkumar, a 22-year-old engineering student, has made the nation proud by clinching a gold medal at the Speed Skating World Championship in China. Velkumar, hailing from Guindy, Tamil Nadu, demonstrated exceptional talent, competing in the 1000-meter sprint event. He completed the race in 1:24.924, earning him the top spot. This victory marks a historic moment, as Velkumar becomes the first Indian to win a gold medal in skating at a World Championship. His achievement adds to India’s growing presence in the world of speed skating. Earlier in the competition, he also secured a bronze medal in the 500-meter sprint, making it his second medal at the championship. Prior to Velkumar’s achievement, Krish Sharma won gold in the junior category of the 1000-meter sprint, making India the dominant force in this event.
