Indian athletes have performed strongly on Tuesday (August 6), the 11th day of Paris Olympics 2024. India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra threw his first throw at a distance of 89.34 meters in the qualification round. With this, he has qualified for the final. At the same time, India’s veteran female wrestler Vinesh Phogat has confirmed her place in the semi-finals of the event by defeating Ukraine’s Oxana Livach in the quarter-finals.

Today, first of all, India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra threw 89.34 meters in the first attempt in the qualification of Group B, which was much more than the qualification standard of 84 meters. Neeraj has made a great start to defend his gold medal and is expected to perform similarly in the final. Pakistan’s rival Arshad Nadeem also made it to the final by throwing 86.59 meters in the first attempt. Both athletes made their best throws of this season. Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra entered the final by topping both Group A and B.

The final match will be held on August 8

After qualifying directly for the final in the first attempt during the qualification round of Group B, Neeraj and Arshad decided not to participate further in the qualification and did not throw the javelin in the second attempt. The final match of the men’s javelin throw event will be held on August 8 at 11.50 pm Indian time.

Neeraj can become the 5th player to win two gold medals in javelin throw

Neeraj will now enter the final with the aim of becoming the fifth male javelin thrower to retain the title in Olympic history. If Neeraj wins, he will become the first Indian to win two Olympic gold medals in the individual category. So far this feat has been achieved by Eric Lemming (Sweden), Jonni Myra (Finland), Jan Zelenji (Czech Republic) and Andreas T (Norway).

Vinesh won the match in a strong style

Vinesh Phogat performed brilliantly in the quarterfinal match against Oxana Livach and won 7-5. At the start of the match, Vinesh took a 2-0 lead in the first round. At the start of the second round, she increased her lead to 4-0. However, Oxana also made a strong comeback and narrowed the score to 5-3.

Vinesh suffered from exhaustion at this point and asked her coach to take up the challenge. The video referee rejected the challenge, causing Vinesh to lose another point. Meanwhile, Vinesh got a few seconds to refresh herself. Then, Vinesh pushed her opponent out and scored two points to take a 7-4 lead. Oxana added one more point, but it was not enough to stop Vinesh. Eventually, Vinesh won 7-5 and made it to the semi-finals. She will next face Cuba’s Guzman Lopez at 9.45 pm tonight.
