India’s men’s hockey team has won 8 gold (Paris Olympics)

India first participated in the Olympic Games in 1900, since then it has won a total of 10 gold medals. The special thing is that out of these 10 medals, 8 have been won by the hockey team, while 2 individual players have won gold. The Indian hockey team won 6 consecutive gold medals in the Olympics between 1928 and 1956, then in the 1964 and 1980 editions also the hockey team won 2 more gold medals.

When was the first gold won?

India won its first Olympic gold medal as an independent nation in 1948. That year, the Indian hockey team won the gold medal by defeating Great Britain 4-0 in the final. This final is known as the ‘Battle of Champions’.

Abhinav Bindra won the gold medal for India in the 2008 Olympics. He became the first player to win a gold medal in individual sports for the country. Bindra scored a total of 700.5 points in the 10 meter men’s air rifle event and surpassed Athens 2004 Olympics gold medalist Zhu Qinan, who scored a total of 699.7 points.

Neeraj Chopra

In the Tokyo Olympics, javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra created history by winning the second individual gold for the country. He won the gold medal by throwing the javelin 87.58 meters in his second attempt. Chopra gave India its first medal in athletics after independence (1947).
